NZ Direct Citizenship Pathway to Australia

The Albanese Government has delivered on its promise of a long overdue direct pathway for New Zealand citizens living in Australia.

Many New Zealanders who live, work and pay taxes in Australia were not able to become Australian citizens.

They were not able to become full members of our society and were left “permanently temporary”.

From 1 July 2023, eligible New Zealand citizens who have been living in Australia for four or more years will be able to apply for Australian citizenship.

This pathway recognises the unbreakable bond between Australia and New Zealand, and provides greater balance to the rights available to Australian citizens in New Zealand. We are delighted that New Zealanders who already call Australia home will now be able to enjoy the benefits of Australian citizenship, and share the common values that bring us together as Australians.

Citizenship is integral to our national identity. It’s only fair that we extend this offer to one of our closest friends and allies who have been contributing to our communities for years.

Applications under this direct pathway will open from 12.30pm (AEST) on Saturday 1 July 2023, via the Department of Home Affairs website.
