Member for Banks

Elected in May 2025, Zhi Soon is the Federal Member for the South-Western Sydney electorate of Banks.  A lifelong local, Zhi is dedicated to ensuring Banks has the services it needs and has a strong voice in Federal Parliament. He lives in Padstow with his partner Bridget, daughter Dorothy and golden retriever Brinkley.

Zhi brings a wealth of experience to the Federal Parliament. A respected education policy leader and a leading thinker in behavioural economics, Zhi also served as an Australian diplomat, including in Afghanistan. A qualified lawyer, Zhi was also awarded the Young Australian of the Year (ACT) in 2008 for his contributions to the community. Underpinning this has been a deep commitment to public service, and guiding principles of fairness and integrity.

In his first speech to Parliament, Zhi spoke of his belief that no matter what circumstances you are born into, we should have a system that allows people to live happy, healthy and successful lives, and a society that is productive but supports each other.

Zhi is in Parliament to improve the lives of communities across Banks. As part of the Labor Government, he is committed to protecting and strengthening Medicare, investing in education from pre-school through to university and TAFE, and easing cost of living pressures on families with better jobs and tax cuts.
