Current Position:

Overview

The IT Manager is responsible for the delivery of technology infrastructure to support the operations of the Australian Labor Party National Secretariat. This role provides operational support while driving technology initiatives in a fast-paced and politically sensitive environment.

The IT Manager is a hands-on role supported by expert service providers who deliver
Microsoft 365, networking and connectivity services, and core technical services (such as telephony, printing, and devices). The role is the internal cybersecurity champion liaising with consultants to ensure the security of ALP systems.

In addition, this role oversees the technical delivery of the ALP’s national campaign
headquarters, national conference, and other major events.

Key responsibilities

Technical operations

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, and performance of IT systems, networks, and cloud services.
  • Liaise with service providers to manage the Microsoft 365 environment and act as
    the internal Microsoft 365 administrator.
  • Ensure reliable delivery of essential services, including connectivity, access control, printing, file storage, and email deliverability.
  • Deliver IT onboarding and offboarding, including account setup, permissions, and
    orientation to key systems.
  • Provide hands-on technical support to staff and escalate issues to service providers.
  • Maintain documentation of systems, processes, and user guides.
  • Oversee planning and execution of technical operations for the national campaign
    headquarters, national conference, and other major events.
  • Analyse business requirements of all units to determine their technology needs.
  • Develop mitigations for technical disruptions to ensure continuity of operations and the ability to recover from technological failures.

Cybersecurity

  • Work with cybersecurity consultants to identify, assess, and mitigate cybersecurity risks across all IT systems, networks, and applications.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant standards (e.g., ACSC Essential Eight) and legislative requirements.
  • Deliver continuous monitoring, vulnerability management, and threat detection capabilities, and lead proactive efforts to prevent breaches and respond to emerging threats.
  • Champion cybersecurity awareness for staff.

Project and event delivery

  • Lead and coordinate the technology setup for the national campaign headquarters, national conference, and other major events.
  • Deliver IT components of organisational projects, ensuring deadlines, practicality, and service continuity.
  • Analyse business needs and identify technical solutions.

This position reports to the Director of Operations.

About this roll

  • This is a permanent, full-time appointment, based in Canberra.
  • The position is part of the Operations Unit and reports to the Director of Operations.
  • The position will be filled at Level 2 of the Projects/Operational/Executive classification ($115,000 – $145,000 + 12% superannuation) as set out in the ALP National Secretariat Terms and Conditions of Employment. Remuneration will be discussed with suitable applicants.
