VICTORIAN MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT
The Albanese Labor Government is delivering Victoria the infrastructure it deserves, with three further projects announced under the $1.2 billion Road Blitz to upgrade roads, reduce congestion and improve safety in Melbourne’s growing suburbs.
Melbourne’s outer suburbs are some of the fastest-growing in Australia.
These crucial projects will help commuters get home sooner and safer, so they are spending less time on the road and more time with their families.
In partnership with the Allan Labor Government, three projects will share in over $260 million to fix some of Melbourne’s most notorious roads, including:
We’re investing $250 million to duplicate 3.7km of Mickleham Road from Dellamore Boulevard, Greenvale, to Craigieburn Road, and upgrade intersections along the route, including walking and cycling paths.
Drivers are already enjoying safer and smoother travel through Greenvale following last year’s opening of Stage 1 of the Mickleham Road Upgrade, which duplicated the road from Somerton Road to Dellamore Boulevard, thanks to almost $230 million in joint funding from the Albanese and Allan Labor Governments.
Today's announcement will increase capacity, easing congestion for Melbourne's growing north for residents commuting to and from the city and heading to the airport.
Further east, $3 million will go towards planning for transport network upgrades in and around Drouin and Warragul. This planning work will identify opportunities for future investments to improve travel times and road safety that will service this growing urban area.
In Melbourne’s outer south east, we’re investing $10 million towards planning and development work to upgrade the Western Port Highway to deliver a safer commute for more than 10,000 drivers who travel along this road every day.
Delivering safety upgrades along this key arterial link will reduce the risk of crashes for residents in Melbourne’s south east who use this vital connection to commute into the city and right across the Mornington Peninsula.
These projects are part of the Albanese and Allan Labor Government’s joint $1.2 billion Road Blitz, with contributions of $1 billion from the Australian Government in the 2025-26 Budget and $200 million from the Victorian Government.
This funding follows the Victorian Government’s existing near billion-dollar road blitz across the state.
The Liberals have proven time and time again that they’re not willing to invest in the critical infrastructure Victorian communities need.
Only a Labor Government will deliver for Victoria.
Quotes attributable to Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King:
“We’re giving Victorians the infrastructure they deserve after being short-changed by the former Coalition government.
“We’re fixing roads right across the state; we’ve doubled our road maintenance funding to local councils, reinstated road maintenance indexation that was scrapped under the former government, and are investing heavily in our regions and cities.
“Whether it’s building a rail link to Melbourne Airport or duplicating the Princes Highway East between Traralgon and Sale, we’re creating safer, smoother journeys right across the state.”
Quotes attributable to Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams:
“As Melbourne’s population continues to grow, we are investing in critical projects that will create better journeys for motorists.
"Only Labor Governments can deliver the projects Victorians need and want – and we are getting on delivering vital road upgrades across wider Melbourne that will provide safer and faster journeys for motorists.
“After ten years of neglect from the Federal Liberal Government, it’s great to have a partner in Canberra that can find Victoria on a map and help deliver critical projects that people rely on every day.”
