Higher Education

If you want to be the first to hear about all the work we're doing to improve the higher education system, then sign up below.

In the Budget, we announced that we were wiping around $3 billion in student debt for 3 million Australians. That’s all Australians with a HELP debt.

From now on, Student debt will never grow faster than wages. We also announced that we're going to massively expand FEE-FREE Uni ready courses.

We'll do this with a $350 million investment to ensure more young Aussies from the regions and suburbs get access to high quality tertiary education.

Labor understands that placement poverty is a real thing. That’s why, for the first time ever, the Commonwealth Government will fund a Prac Payment for teaching, nursing (including midwifery) and social workers students. This will give people who have signed up to do some of the most important jobs in this country a bit of extra help to get the qualifications they need.

We're also introducing needs-based funding to provide tailored academic support for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This will ensure universities are better able to support these students to succeed at university.

We know there is more work to do, and this is only part of our response to the Universities Accord.
