Throughout Alex’s life he has been a passionate advocate for workers rights, this was clearly visible in his 22 years at the Transport Workers Union where he successfully campaigned for improved conditions and wages.
From an early age Alex entered the workforce as a labourer and a truck driver from 1971 to 1976. In 1976 Alex began employment with the TAA (Trans Australian Airlines) as a ramp operator until 1988 when commencing employment with the Transport Workers Union – South Australian/Northern Territory Branch. Alex’s career with the TWU began as a Federal Industrial Relations Officer, before becoming a Union Organiser in 1992. In 1996 Alex was elected as Secretary and Treasurer of the TWU (SA/NT Branch), and served in that position until his election to the Senate in 2010. Alex also served as Vice-President of the TWU National Branch in 2005 before his election to the role of President in 2007.
From 1996 to 2011 Alex was appointed as a Trustee Director for TWUSUPER, the largest industry super fund for employees in transport and logistics. During his period as a director, Alex also worked as the chair of the investment committee, and chair of complaints and appeals.
Alex has also had a distinguished career as a public official with various appointments in the transport sector. Alex was appointed as a commissioner for the National Road Transport Commission in 2003 & 2004. In 2005 Alex was appointed as a director of the South Australian Motor Accident Commission serving until 2010. Alex was also a member and acting chair of the Road Safety Advisory Council of South Australia.
As an active member of the Australian Labor Party, Alex has been a State Council Delegate since 1994 and a National Conference Delegate since 1998.
