Biography

Lindsay was born in Orbost, Victoria. He was educated at Orbost State School, St Anne's and Gippsland Grammar School in Sale. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Master of Arts and first class honours in Law. From 1982 to 1985, Lindsay was an articled clerk and solicitor with Holding Redlich. After working as an electorate assistant for Senator Barney Cooney he joined the staff of the Victorian branch of the Federated Clerk's Union as assistant secretary. He was state secretary of the FCU from 1988 until 1993.

In 1993, Lindsay was elected Member for Melbourne. Between 1996 and 1998, he was Shadow Minister for Transport and following his re-election at the 1998 election Shadow Minister for Finance and Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs. Lindsay was re-elected to the Shadow Ministry on 22 November 2001.

Aside from his work as MP, Lindsay has published several books, has a passion for reading and for playing the piano. Lindsay is also an avid sport fan.

Lindsay is the Minister for Finance and Deregulation in the Rudd Labor Government.

Name Derivation:Named after the city of Melbourne which was named in 1837 by Governor Bourke after Lord Melbourne, who was then Prime Minister of Britain.

Area and Location Description: The Division of Melbourne covers an area of approximately 53 sq km from Merri Creek and the Yarra River in the east to the Maribyrnong River in the west and from Ascot Vale/Brunswick in the north to the Yarra River in the south. The division includes the central business district of the City of Melbourne and the suburbs of Abbotsford, Ascot Vale, Carlton, Carlton North, Clifton Hill, Collingwood, East Melbourne, Fitzroy, Fitzroy North (part), Flemington, Kensington, North Melbourne, Parkville, Richmond and West Melbourne. Alphington and Fairfield are shared with the division of Batman, Brunswick, and Brunswick East are shared with the division of Wills and Docklands is shared with the division of Melbourne Ports.

Products/Industries of the Area: Heavy and light engineering, extensive manufacturing, commercial and retail activities (including Melbourne markets and central business district), dockyards, clothing and footwear industries, warehousing and distributing of white goods, building and other general goods.
