Biography

Sid Sidebottom has lived on the North West Coast since 1975 representing its people as a municipal Councillor for Central Coast (1996- 1998) and as the Federal Member for Braddon from 1998 to 2004. He is Chairman of the Braddon Electorate Council, an ALP Conference delegate from 1991, and President of the Don River Branch of the ALP since 1996.

Sid has always been actively involved in his community in a variety of roles. He was a senior secondary college teacher and administrator of History, the Arts, and Studies in Religion from 1975 to 1998. He was a country footballer and cricketer for 14 years; a footy umpire for 7 years; Chairperson of the Ulverstone Basketball Association since 1998; patron of the Ulverstone Yacht Club; and patron of the Burnie and Devonport sub-branches of the National Servicemen’s Association. He is also an experienced theatre director and actor and is currently patron of the Devonport Choral and the Ulverstone Repertory Societies.

Sid is married to Bronwyn and has two sons – Julian (21) and William (19). He is an Honours graduate in History from the University of Tasmania, holds the Tasmanian Teaching Certificate, and has a post-graduate Diploma in International Relations.

He was re-elected as the MP for Braddon on 24 Nov, 2007

Name Derivation:Named after Sir Edward Braddon 1829-1904, Premier of Tasmania 1894-99, and a Member of the House of Representatives 1901-04.

Area and Location Description: Braddon is a rural electorate covering approximately 11 760 sq km in North West Tasmania. It includes King Island. The cities of Burnie and Devonport are in the Division of Braddon. Other towns include Currie, Latrobe, Penguin, Port Sorell, Smithton, Somerset, Stanley, Ulverstone, Waratah and Wynyard.

Products/Industries of the Area: Forestry, fishing, kelp harvesting, dairying, beef cattle production and vegetable, poppy and pyrethrum growing are major primary industries. Vegetable processing, cheese manufacture and sawmilling complement these activities. An iron ore mine is located at Savage River. Manufacturing industry includes paper mills at Burnie and Wesley Vale, mining equipment at Burnie and weaving mills at Devonport. A number of telecommunications call centres are located in the Division. Burnie and Devonport are major ports, and interstate airports are located at Devonport and Wynyard. A daily passenger ferry service operates between Devonport and Port Melbourne.
