Biography
John was born in 1950 in rural New South Wales and educated by the Christian Brothers at Waverley College. He worked as a law clerk in the local family practice before joining the Commonwealth Public Service in 1970. Between 1970 and 1991, John was employed by the Department of Veterans' Affairs in jobs that included serving on the Repatriation Board and as NSW State Audit Manager.
John is an accredited mediator with LEADR (Lawyers Engaged in Alternative Dispute Resolution) and was the NSW State Manager (Reviews and Grievances) at the Public Service and Merit Protection Commission before his election to Parliament in 1998. John is the Caucus returning officer and a member of both the House of Representatives Standing Committees on Legal and Constitutional Affairs and Communications, Transport and the Arts.
John is now Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Trade in the Rudd Labor Government.
