Biography

Chris Bowen lives with his family in Smithfield. He was educated at Smithfield Public School, St Johns Park High School and the University of Sydney, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Economics.

Chris was elected to Fairfield City Council in 1995 and was Mayor of Fairfield for 1998 and 1999. He was elected President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) in 2000 and served til 2002.

Chris was elected to Parliament in 2004 and was elected as Deputy Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics, Finance and Public Administration and was also a member of the Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services.

In December 2006, Chris was elected to the Federal Labor Party's frontbench and was the Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Revenue & Competition Policy.

Chris was appointed Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs upon the election of the Rudd Labor Government in 2007. In 2009, he was elevated to the cabinete and appointed Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law, and Minister for Human Services.

Area and Location Description: Prospect covers an area of approximately 164 sq km bounded by Ropes and South Creeks in the west, the Great Western Highway and the Western Motorway in the north, Burnett Street, Kenyons Road, Sherwood Road, disused Sydney Water Supply Pipeline, Betts Road, Warren Road, Prospect Creek, Cumberland Highway and Prospect Creek in the east, with Orphan School Creek, Bus T-Way, Prairie Vale Road, Cowpasture Road and Elizabeth Drive generally providing the boundary in the south. Suburbs include Erskine Park, Fairfield Heights, Fairfield West, Greystanes, Horsley Park, Huntingwood, Minchinbury, Mount Vernon, Pemulwuy, St Clair, Wetherill Park and parts of Abbotsbury, Blacktown, Bossley Park, Canley Vale, Cecil Park, Eastern Creek, Fairfield, Kemps Creek, Merrylands, Merrylands West, Prairiewood, Prospect, Smithfield and South Wentworthville.
