Media Statement - 1st October 2007
The Launceston Regional Tennis Centre will go ahead with funding of $500,000 if a Rudd Labor Government is elected.
Simon Crean, Shadow Minister for Trade & Regional Development and Jodie Campbell, Labor’s Candidate for Bass will make the announcement in Launceston today.
The funding combined with similar commitments from the State and Local Governments, together with Tennis Australia, will enable the construction of 11 new outdoor tennis courts and the redevelopment of the Sports Centre entrance and parking area.
Together with the existing courts at the centre, the additional facilities will provide significant local and regional sport and recreation opportunities for northern Tasmania.
The extension will foster greater community participation in tennis and will enable Launceston to attract national and international level events to the region.
The Shadow Minister for Trade and Regional Development, Simon Crean, said ‘Federal Labor is proud to support the important community priority as a partner with the Council and the State Government. This project is a great example of the benefit of entering into partnership with other levels of government to achieve a significant benefit for the region’.
‘Federal Labor is committed to sustainable regional development and we will support local solutions which have the support of their communities which stack up and have the support of the Area Consultative Committee’.
‘Jodie Campbell has championed this project and given the concept her full support’ Mr Crean said.
Jodie Campbell congratulated the community and the Launceston City Council for working hard to achieve the expansion of the Centre.
‘The extension of the Tennis Centre facilities will benefit the entire region, will encourage more children and young people to get involved in sport. The extension will also enable the region to attract larger tournaments to the region providing a boost for local businesses’ Ms Campbell said.
