Media Statement - 2nd October 2007
Federal Labor has welcomed this week’s historic meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
It is to be hosted by the Israeli Prime Minister at his residence in Jerusalem.
The meeting will an important signal that the peace process, which has effectively stalled since 2001, is being reinvigorated.
Federal Labor hopes that the push to reinvigorate the peace process by the two peoples is successful.
Israel is sending a powerful signal to the Palestinian Territories and the international community that it wants lasting peace in the region.
Israel’s determination carries with it the hopes of a people who have faced decades of violent extremism, suicide bombs and terrible loss of life.
Federal Labor has strongly supported a two State solution with Israel’s right to exist within safe and secure borders.
Federal Labor recognises that the road to peace will be difficult and there will be setbacks.
Federal Labor hopes that Prime Minister Olmert, Mr Abbas and their respective negotiating teams are able to work towards a joint vision for a peace agreement.
Federal Labor urges Prime Minister John Howard to ensure that Australia is represented and makes a contribution among the more than 30 countries at the November peace conference.
Australia can play a constructive role as a middle player at the November peace conference.
