More than 45,000 extra people are now covered by private hospital insurance, and more than 55,000 extra people have general treatment or ancillary cover.

Those who made dire predictions of a drop in the number of people in private health insurance funds have been proved wrong yet again.  The latest figures released today by the Private Health Insurance Council show that the numbers of Australians taking out private health insurance continues to grow.

The Operations of the Private Health Insurers Annual Report 2008-09 shows the private health insurance industry completed the financial year in good health, with the number of people covered by private health insurance, revenue and benefit outlays all increasing.

More division and confusion has emerged in the Coalition on economic policy, with its most senior leaders at loggerheads on means-testing of the private health insurance rebate and tax policy.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has clearly indicated the Coalition will oppose the Government's moves to means-test the private health insurance rebate, with this position confirmed yesterday by a spokesperson for Mr Abbott, according to a report in The Age today.
