It was the biggest ALP victory since Federation. Labor had been out of office far too long. There were spirited renditions of “The Red Flag” at the Kurrajong.

The new ministry was well credentialled. It contained two former state premiers, and the Health minister was one of the most stirring orators in the party’s history. There was not even room for two talented backbenchers who were each to become prime minister, although two future prime ministers were included.

 I was born in 1891, the year the Labor Party was born. This was appropriate, as I was to become a prominent identity in it.

I worked as a boilermaker, became well-known as a footballer and boxer, and immersed myself in the labour movement. In 1915 I was state secretary of the boilermakers’ union.
