Strengthening the Australian Economy

The Rudd Government’s fiscal stimulus has been vital to Australia’s standing as one of only three advanced economies to avoid technical recession.

Avoiding recession in Australia has had its costs, but these pale in comparison to the long term costs of recession, including higher unemployment.

It is argued by some that future generations are being saddled with unsustainable debt as a result of the stimulus. I would say two things to those people.

The duplication of the Pacific Highway is gathering pace, with work on the Glenugie upgrade now underway and a preferred builder for the Sapphire to Woolgoolga section having been selected.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said excellent progress is being made on these two long overdue projects.

Keeping Australia Working

More than 8 million Americans have lost their job in the past 12 months. In Spain unemployment has rocketed up from 8.8 per cent to over 19.  In Europe unemployment has hit 10 per cent for the first time in more than a decade. Worldwide 27 million people have lost their jobs in the past year.

Recessions kill jobs.

That’s why the economic stimulus plan is so important. It kept us out of recession and kept Australia working.

Here in Australia 180,000 additional jobs have been created in the past 12 months.

Stimulus provides Tasmanian road upgrade (News)

When finished, the bypass will ease congestion and give motorists a quicker, safer trip - and that is what the Rudd Government’s Nation Building for Recovery strategy is all about.

A contract for the construction of the $41.5 million Kingston Bypass has been awarded and the contract was signed today. The successful tenderer was Tasmanian-based VEC Civil Engineering Pty Ltd.

The project is being jointly funded, with the Tasmanian Government contributing $26.5 million and the Australian Government $15 million.

The Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure, Graeme Sturges, said that he was delighted that a Tasmanian company had been awarded the contract for such an important project.

Stimulus info for Hunter Valley business (News)

The economic stimulus plan is supporting jobs, tradies and small businesses during the economic downturn and is an important part of the region’s economic recovery.

Businesses from across the Hunter are invited to attend an information session to outline opportunities for local business to take advantage of the economic stimulus package.

Parliamentary Secretary for Employment Jason Clare said the information session was part of the Keep Australia Working initiative.

Safety inspections for foil insulation (News)

Every home that has foil insulation installed under the Government’s Home Insulation Program will undergo an electrical safety inspection because inspections to date have found examples of ‘live’ insulation in roofs.

Mr Garrett said the move to a full program of electrical safety inspections followed the findings of inspections to date which had identified examples of ‘live’ insulation in roofs.

A One Stop Jobs Shop

What would it take to attract 9000 people to the Whitlam Leisure Centre in Western Sydney on a Friday? A Pearl Jam concert? A 20/20 cricket match? An appearance by the great man himself?

Last December I found the answer - the chance to get a job. 

As part of the Rudd Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan we held a Jobs Expo in Western Sydney. In one day 9000 people turned up - keen to find a job. The Whitlam Leisure Centre was transformed into a jobs supermarket, a one-stop-shop for jobs.

Next time you drive past a primary school you’ll surely see how the Rudd Government’s $42 billion Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan is supporting jobs and small business and is building the long-term infrastructure for the country’s future.

With 70 per cent of the stimulus invested on road, rail, school construction and housing infrastructure, it is supporting up to 210,000 jobs.
