Clean Up Australia Day in La Trobe

Clean up Australia Day followed some ferocious weather in La Trobe. Not the most ideal conditions for those of us out helping to tidy up around a creek and a storm drain!! Despite the very soggy surrounds, many local volunteers were out in their fluoro orange vests cleaning up the walking track along the Blind Creek Trail in Ferntree Gully.

Real Heroes of the Bushfires

The last year was one that will be recalled with sadness in many Victorian towns, and across Australia.

In the space of an afternoon and evening our world changed, 173 lives were lost and towns became war zones.

This week-end marks the first anniversary of the February 7th bushfires which damaged 78 communities across Victoria and devastated towns like Marysville, Kinglake and Strathewen.

The shock and grief is still being felt, and will continue to be felt for a long time.

The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, today congratulated Australia's 2010 Local Hero - New South Wales OzHarvest founder Ronni Kahn.

Ms Kahn, from Bronte, was recognised as part of the Australian of the Year Awards 2010 for her social and environmental leadership as the founder of OzHarvest - a charity which collects excess food from commercial operators and redistributes it to local charities.

The Prime Minister today announced the sale of areas of land at the Fremantle Artillery Barracks in Western Australia commonly known as Cantonment Hill, to the City of Fremantle.

The Australian Government has approved the concessional sale of three areas of land which form part of the 3.87 hectare site to the City of Fremantle on the basis that it will redevelop the land for ongoing community use.

A Commonwealth environment grant will help preserve eroding beaches at Yirrakala near Nhulunbuy.

Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon said Yirrkala Dhanbul Aboriginal Corporation had won $19,000 funding through the 2009-10 Caring for our Country Community Action Grants program.

Mr Snowdon said it would enable the group to protect rapidly eroding beaches in the Yirrkala area, beginning with Yirrkala itself.

The grant is one of five Community Action Grants awarded to the Northern Territory in 2009-10, worth a total of $98,347.

Extra assistance for Australians in need (News)

Australian families under financial pressure will have access to more than 50 new financial counsellors and an additional 49 emergency relief providers in disadvantaged communities across Australia.

The allocation of these positions is part of the Australian Government's $12 million boost over two years to help an extra 14,000 people a year. We are also providing $3.3 million to deliver emergency relief for the first time in 85 regional communities.

In the lead up to Christmas, more and more people are knocking on the doors of community providers for help to put food on the table and pay rent and bills.
